Description

Hamro Cycle Yatra is a social gathering to honor waste workers, who work day and night in harsh weather conditions to make our surroundings clean and lively. Since waste management is a big problem in Nepalese context, these clean agents help the community to dispose and segregate wastes by giving door-to-door services. Despite their inevitable contribution, these sanitation workers are labeled as “unclean” or “unhygienic” contrary to it's us who are creating dirt. And, they are often mistreated therefore, Hamro Cycle Yatra is specially designed to honor their existence in this community. Population growth is more inclined towards consumer products, which gives rise to more wastes and to manage this waste, clean agents are needed, as to cater to this demand the number of waste workers increases. But, we do not appreciate their indulgence in cleanliness and their hardship and dedication towards their work, hence to bring positive change in the mindset of people and contribute as part of ourselves through this honoring. Our sanitation workers have the most important job i.e. to preserve community – to preserve the status of our environment, to ensure that standard of cleanliness remains high, and so that waste will not affect people’s health adversely. These are invaluable jobs that follow the basic rules of cleaning the environment-3R’s (Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling). These are the people responsible for sweeping phohor every day and making our lives easier. They are the people reasons why our environment is maintained clean and are the ones why we do not see garbage bags lined outside every alleys and street in the city. These people are in fact true environmentalists, in every sense of the word and we need to appreciate them. Two main objectives of the event are: • To give social recognition to our sanitation workers as an integral part of our society for a healthy livelihood. • To aware of the advantages of the use of cycling, an eco-friendly means of transportation for reducing air pollution and controlling traffic. There are a lot more emotion and sentiments tied and it would be an injustice to call just a cycle rally. Through this event, we are trying to achieve a long-lasting, positive image of our public service heroes, our environmentalists, while also motivating the young generations to raise their voice and act wisely. Rally will be followed by the recreational activities. In addition, we will provide primary health care services and first aid kits to ensure the safety of sanitation workers. Refreshments will be provided to all participants post event. We will also have renowned celebrities from Nepali movie industry to grab public attention and interest. We are coordinating with few media houses to reach as many people as possible.
