Description

Yala Mandala cordially invites you to our upcoming speaker session: how the Newars contributed to Asian art. The one-hour session will be facilitated by art historian Mr. Naresh Shakya. About the session: Newars of Kathmandu Valley are renowned painters who created finest paintings, not just in the valley, but in far off locations in Tibet and China. The Newars are not one socio-ethnic group but a mixed community absorbing all the people who entered the Kathmandu valley. They have produced art of pictorial form, stone images, carving on wood, emboss on brass, cast in bronze, painted on plaster, molded terra cotta, and made thousands of shrines within the valley for a long period of time. Newars took their painting skill to many parts of Asia. Arniko, who was one of the finest artists produced in the Nepal’s soil, created different art works in Tibet and China. His distinct style of painting with the combination of different local style created a new blend of art in Asia. Many Newar artists in different periods contributed to the development of painting in many parts of Asia. Some of the finest influence of Newar painting could be found in Mustang in Nepalese Himalayan region, Tibetan monasteries, Ladakh in India, and many parts in China specially Mogao and Yulin grottoes in Dunhuang. With all these strong influences of Newar paintings in these important Buddhist sites, Shakya will focus on its contribution to Asian Art. --- About the speaker: Naresh Shakya, an art historian by profession, with a Masters in Buddhist Studies and Arts, has published papers and publications on “Newar Buddhist Art of Nepal and Its Influences in the Neighboring Countries" (Institute of Dunhuang Studies Lanzhou University, Gansu Province, China), “Buddhist Painting in Kathmandu Valley” (Dharmacakra Academy Center, Nepal), “Newar Art Influence in Dunhuang Grottoes” (Dunhuang Academy, Dunhuang, China), “Preservation and Protection of Newar Mural Art in Upper Mustang” (International Buddhist Conference), “Preservation, Protection and Promotion of Buddhist Cultural Heritage" (Lumbini), “Influence of Newar Art in Mogao and Yulin Grottoes in Dunhuang” in Itihas Pravah Annual Journal of Nepalese Studies (Vol. 6), and essay: “Painting as Expression of Buddhist Teaching” on Embodied Enlightenment (Bodhisattva Gallery). --- About us: Yala Mandala is an artisan village comprising of a gallery, cafe, and handicraft workshop, which aims to contemporize tradition.
