Description

Lho means age or year and Sar means fresh. Lhosar means the beginning of the new year or the New Year. Tamang celebrates their new year just after the no-moon day or new moon day of the Magh. Sonam Lhochar is celebrated on different days as per their calendar, which is according to the Bikram Sambat. The calendar is an ancient Chinese/Tibetan calendar. Tamang calculates their year according to the animal symbols, where they have 12 different animals and the calendar starts with a rat and it ends with a Boar. Tamang is the oldest community in Nepal and it includes about 8% of the total Nepal population. It is an ancient tribe and they belong to the Yambu. Tamang means a horse Rider and the people were associated with the business such as Horse riding and trading. The people of Tamang now mostly live in the hilly region of the Himalayan range and Kathmandu, which is a city in Nepal. The people of Tamang are culturally rich and are very traditional. They have their own music and their musical instrument is called Damphu. The Tamang celebrate their New Year by cleaning and preparing to welcome the New Year. A specific ritual is also followed where the monasteries perform a mask dance to get rid of the negative force. The customs of the celebration differ from place to place.
